View Full Version : Always On DRM for Games

Curious what others thought about this. Frankly it irritates me as I have to pay for data, so it's just not possible to play these games often. Additionally, requiring online access to play single player games (ie. Diablo3 and SimCity) has proven to be a colossal disaster for companies (not saying it's EAs fault but...)
Honestly given the expense associated with running servers capable of supporting the consumer base and all the negative publicity when these things fail that they would realize the cost of pirated games vs the loss of business and expense of these servers isn't worth it. Glad I didn't purchase SimCity (although I wanted to), after the debacle with D3 and how pissed I still am with EA over the failure that was Mass Effect 3 and the yearly BS that is flawed and buggy Madden and NCAA releases, I've decided I'm not paying another red cent to EA, or any other game that endorses an always-on DRM.
What do the rest of you guys think about it? Worth it or not?

I was pretty bummed by all the negative reviews Diablo 3 and SimCity received for their always-online requirements. They were two titles I was very looking forward to buying, but now I just can't bring myself to do it.
Always-on DRM seemed like an inevitability. I'm not much of a multiplayer, but I could see the possibilities online gameplay could provide. I just think they jumped the gun a bit on this one.

I refuse to by games with DRM that I find intrusive or annoying.
Assassins Creed series, Diablo 3(didn't like D2 so no big loss), Simcity. Not happening.
is it like steam where you can go into offline mode?

Nope. All your saves have to goto the "cloud" aka their servers

Intrusive DRM is the worst. I don't think that these companies get it - when your software is intrusive to the end user's gaming experience, people will not buy your games. They will generally pirate and subsequently crack them as it is easier to do so than it is to deal with intrusive DRM.
This is something that Steam is generally doing right - they actually made it easier for us to spend money than it was to go out and pirate a game in order to play it.
Also, if your game requires that I install Punk Buster to play, I won't be paying or playing.

See o think punk buster IS great nothing more annoying then a punk with an aim bot hitting me with a head shot using a spray and pray gun repeatedly while playing support .... Rant over

I refuse to purchase games with this crap. I also wish that EA would DIAF. Their ability to purchase good dev's, gut them, then sell them off is really getting on my nerves. They're the friggin Unicron of the video game world.
well that sucks, hopefully like a lot of other games that have tried this stuff, they backpedal on one of their service packs..
that or you wait someone will create a "local hosted cloud server" for your backups
i don't play said games. been playing STO and downloaded .WADs for my wii (i stick to stuff that HAS NEVER and WILL NEVER be released on VC, so i don't see it as unethical...fwiw).
