It's simple. IE8 is the highest XP can go...

Work computer. Passwords for everything so I run Roboform for managing them and my free version won't install on the new FF. I'm looking into workarounds for FF. Work is going to move everyone to Win7 but I refuse to upgrade Roboform because their new model is a subscription service.

My posts randomly change from what I posted to something else. Some weird bug.

I was wondering what happened... I was getting script errors on my work machine, (XP,IE8) couldn't make the site work for more than a couple minutes today. Came home and got the same thing on my computer at home. Switched to firefox, and it was fine. Saw this thread, Opened the site back up in IE8, immediately closed chat, and it seems to be working fine...

here's one thought i had alan.
shoutbox eliminates the "invisibility" status for people who have it enabled. it would be nice if thread updates were only provided for people NOT set to invisible.

It would be nice to be able to turn thread updates off.

I don't really use the chat function but reading this thread that was one of my first thoughts. Why not just have a toggle button to turn the updates on or off?

I'm sure Alan is busy with other stuff after this BIG update but that would be a great option I'm sure he can do.

the shoutbox also locks up IE6 on my work PC making browsing this forum impossible since the shoutbox is on every page.

I am working on a setting to let users disable to chatbox.
I can't add options to control the post notifications. I'm researching options.

Not trying to pick on you or anything, but you really need to replace that browser if at all possible in your work situation. These days, you can count on just about half the web not playing nice with IE 6 -- developers have stopped supporting it and even Microsoft has started a campaign to get people to stop using it (Internet Explorer 6 Countdown | Death to IE 6 | IE6 Countdown (http://www.ie6countdown.com/)).
I know not every work environment is conducive in upgrading it, but if you're in a position to vocalize your complaints, I'd suggest giving it a try.

can't upgrade. it's an xp system so chrome is a no-go.
and the websites i have to be logged in to and use at work do not play nice with firefox or anything not-ie, sadly.
if i could upgrade i would.
My situation is typical - 32-bit XP/IE8.
Board is all-around balky loading, scrolling, posting...chat scrolls to first post rather than last - makes chat unusable.
It's my work PC, so zero options, no workarounds, no other browsers allowed.

Alan - I don't know if you have the time, but maybe an alternative IE-only theme is in order. Get rid of the extra fluff, scripts, etc -- back to basics.

I have set chat to be in an inactive state when the page is loaded. It will stay in that state till you activate it.
I did alot of resarch on this chat and saw no indication that their were any issues with IE 8 and up. I'm less than happy that the issues do exist. I may rip it out and out the old one back in. :(

Can some of the IE users start providing specific descriptions of the issues they are having.
Don't just say "its slow" I need things like "I can type a full sentence before the first letter shows up"
The typing lag you mention is constant Alan, but of varying effect; I've had script refuse to appear until after I've given up.
Often the curser freezes; scrolling is useless - changing pages requires a long wait every time everywhere in the forum, and once the page indicates it is loaded, you can scroll a post or two, then it decides something is wacko and stops again.
Put your curser on something and click, only to discover the page has shifted a few lines and you're clicking in space, or you've clicked on something else entirely by mistake and you have to undo that - more waiting...
I wonder why the chat box can't be customized to put the typing box on top OR bottom, or the post order/scroll reversed to accomodate new posts?

I can move the position of the elements and the order if I want to . Having the post bar at the botton and having the posts show old at the top and new at the bottom is the way most chats work.

i like the way it's positioned now

I wouldn't have a problem with it except that every time I or anyone else posts, chat scrolls to the oldest rather that the newest post, and I have to manually scroll back to the new stuff to see my post or any responses to it.
The way it currently works could not possibly be by design.

Definitely not by design. I'm actually having the opposite problem. In other browsers, the chat automatically scrolls down to reveal the new responses. However, if you manually scroll up to read how the conversation got where it did, every new response will reset the scroll back down to the bottom. Very unfortunate if people are responding like rapidfire. :p
Not sure if that one can be fixed though.

I suspect it's the same problem, suffering from a poor description on my part.
Alan - site is still pig-slow, but it seems I've fixed the chat issue by kicking my zoom to 150%.
Don't have the slightest idea why this worked, but.
