After putting down a respectable 468RWHP and running 11.3 @ 125MPH at BPU+ (which I believe puts me in the top 10 if the list was actually maintained) I've decided to kick off the single build on my Hardtop. My original plan was improve on the 11.3 and then install GSC S1 cams, Beehive springs, etc.. and take a shot at running 10's on the twins, but my impatience finally got the best of me. This project will have multiple phases, which I will do my best to document here over the course of what will actually be 2 projects -- 1) Single build on my Hardtop and 2) Swapping the twins over to my '97 auto. The auto is still running stock fuel, stock stall, stock auto, etc... so the 67mm is not the most responsive setup -- 12.8 @ 122MPH with a 2.3 60'.... I really wanted to do a built auto and high stall, etc... but later decided to focus my efforts on the Hardtop build. The stock twins in sequential on the auto with the 1# turned up will be much more fun on the street and should still run 11's @ 118-120MPH (yes I will be going back to the track afterward).
First things first, let's get those twins off!
One last look before the fun begins...

After about 30 minutes..

About 1hr in - letting the PB Blaster soak in a little, which wasn't really needed. Next steps require jacking the car up and draining the oil and coolant

Front turbo - in perfect shape with absolutely zero shaft play

Now the real fun begins....

The parts box is starting to fill up - since I plan to re-install these twins on the green car I'm taking extra special care to not cut or otherwise damage hoses, lines etc... This adds more timing and planning. Fortunately after only 44k well-cared-for miles, all of the hoses are supple, nothing is rust welded togehther, sludged up, etc... Everything is coming off nicely. And with the tried and true 'jack handle on the strut tower fulcrum to the stubby 14mm wrench' method, I made very short work of the "bitch bolt" on the EGCV. Who needs fancy tools when you've got leverage...!
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk252/AHPowelson/Supra_Hardtop_Build/DSCN3904r.jpg
With the EGCV out of the way, the oil lines and brackets (IMO the worst part of removing the twins) are more easily accessible. You can finally see the ground from the engine bay...!

Once the oil lines are off the bottom 2 bolts holding the turbos to the manifold are more easily accessible -- the rest of the job is a breeze from here. Almost there....!

With the turbos off, the bottom manifold bolts are easily removed. You can remove the turbos with the manifold still attached, but IMO it is WAYYYYY easier to remove the turbos first

Made a huge mess but it's late and cold - not bad progress for a day's work:
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk252/AHPowelson/Supra_Hardtop_Build/DSCN3923r.jpg
I started around 1pm, worked for about an hour, took a lunch break and farted around for a bit, jacked the car up and worked until I got the EGCV off, ate dinner and farted around some more and then went back at it and finished up around 10pm. All told I'd say I had about 6-7hrs of work from hood off until the last pic. Not bad for taking my sweetass time and nothing but simple hand tools. This is only the 2nd time I've tackled this job, but the bigger challenge will be putting them back on the green car - now that's something I've never done...!

Taking a little lunch break - feeling pretty lazy today; not sure how much I'll get accomplished...
Adam -- The long term plan is built engine, true Flex Fuel (either Haltech or ProEFI) and a responsive 850-900WHP. In immediate short term I'm doing:
Double D tuning custom single manifold w/ Precision 66mm wastegate
4" downpipe w/ wastegate recirculated
Precision 67mm P-trim turbo w/ .68ar open hotside (from the Boost Logic setup)
GSC S1 cams
GSC Beehive valvesprings w/ Titanium retainers
Titan billet tensioner bracket
Titan/ATI dampener
Fluidyne radiator
I'll be switching to either a Precision 6766 or a 7175 after I beef up the fuel system.
Next round of mods will be the fuel system and an EMS - both undecided at this point. I want to run some 10's on the stock fuel and ECU first. Built engine and some other odds and ends will either be this fall or next spring. I'm getting married in May, so that's put a bit of a cramp on the hobby budget for this year.
That's a huge 540.
The yellow and green plane is a custom built 40% (~10' wingspan) Carden Extra 330, but there's also a 40% Carden Edge 540 in there as well. That's one of my other hobbies.

So why aren't you using the Boost Logic manifold? It almost looks like it would flow better.
Looks are definitely deceiving. Look at the #3 and 4 runners and how they merge into the collector - essentially perpendicular to the flow. The DD manifold is a FAR superior design in every facet. The Boost Logic manifold is a copy of the original GReddy T78 manifold, with the flange clocked slightly more for better clearance for larger-frame turbos. It's not nearly enough, though; fitment for anything larger than a mid-frame, T04 cover requires a spacer to clear the #1 runner, and then you've got clearance issues on the strut tower. It also uses an the old 4-bolt wastegate flange and the wastegate placement makes recirculating the dump difficult, so mods would have been required to do what I wanted to do. That, and it's a divided/twin-scroll and I wanted an open collectors because 1) it sounds much nicer, IMO and 2) a may decide to try a Quick Spool Valve someday, and you need an open collector for that.
The Boost logic is a fine and manifold, and has made lots of power (over 1000WHP) but has it's quirks and I wanted something entirely different and new school anyway.

The collector is definitely sexxay! The whole things is work of art, and the fitment is perfect all the way up to a GT45 frame. I'm going to have it coated once everything is finalized (wastegate recirc, etc..)
I love that fat ass wastegate runner. What size gate is that?
It's a precision 66mm wastegate. Since I'm going to recirculate the wastegate I didn't want to deal with a dual gate setup. The new PTE billet turbines have been known to have severe boost creep issues since they're so efficient, so I wanted to make sure I could effectively control boost all the way down to the single digits if need be. The 66 is what Darin recommended, so this was a custom one-off for me since they didn't have a jig.
That's a big bitch!

Why not a billet upgrade on the twins while they are off?
Never even crossed my mind. That money would be MUCH better spent on a built auto/stall, and if I still planned to do that I would have just left the BL setup on the green car. There are a few 10 second auto stock twin cars! The stock twins in sequential mode are perfect for the stock auto - makes for a very punchy setup that will run 11's at 118-120MPH. In sequential the #1 turbo turned up it will make 17-18psi by 2400RPM - that's V8-like stump-pulling TQ!
Progress updates next post..

Easy stuff...
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk252/AHPowelson/Supra_Hardtop_Build/DSCN3981r_zps0e3e8242.jpg
Shimmed the EBV to pre-tension it for increased boost on #1 with less drop off on the transition (thanks Stu for the idea!). I'll also be adding an MBC to #1 so I can turn up the boost independently:

Getting there....
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk252/AHPowelson/Supra_Hardtop_Build/DSCN3990r_zpsb1a102f4.jpg
2 steps forward, 1 step back... Turned out this won't work - had to remove the hotside piping on the front turbo to fit the inlet piping - just a minor setback (among many minor setbacks)
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk252/AHPowelson/Supra_Hardtop_Build/DSCN3996_zps5a8c49cd.jpg
And.... I'm spent... Almost made it in one day. The hardline loom is just mocked up, so it looks a little more complete than it really is. Not much left to do at this point:
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk252/AHPowelson/Supra_Hardtop_Build/DSCN3997r_zpsc1631789.jpg
My plan is to finish up today - should definitely be doable. The worst is well over with; just have to finish reconnecting the lines to the loom (will be a pain the ass), install downpipe, intake pipe, MAF, IC pipe, etc... Then fill up with coolant, flush and burp the cooling system and drive!

Got the green Supra finished up Sunday evening, wayyyy later than I originally anticipated. I ended up having to backtrack all the way to removing the EGCV again to re-seat one of the the brass (or whatever it is) donut gaskets. When (I thought) I was finishing up underneath I noticed the EGCV wasn't seated all the way, and that gasket was partially wedged between it and lower exhaust housing.... After trying to loosen the EGCV to get the gasket to seat to no avail, I had to tear everything back apart to get to it... All was not last as it gave me a chance to re-run the vacuum lines from the EBV and pressure tank that connect to the upper loom for easier access. Overall it put me a good 3 frustrating hours behind schedule, but I'm glad I caught it when I did. I got everything back together, and completely flushed the coolant system, which took a lot longer than I originally thought (doesn't everyting!?) and then went for a drive. Man... Full BPU+ sequential twins with #1 turned up to 15psi is an absolutely blast -- super responsive and perfectly matched with the stock auto/stall. 15psi by 2400RPM and I can build 10-12psi off the footbrake almost instantly and absolutely roast the BFG drag radials -- should leave nicely at the track! It's sooooo much more fun to drive now, and it still pulls nicely up top. In fact, the SAFC is reading 82% airflow peak at 17-18psi, which is what it read at 14-15psi on the 67mm, so the healthy twins are doin' work! I forgot how smooth and quiet sequential is if you don't bring #2 online -- the TRD catback is quiet and mellow, with just a little bit of growl up top. The weather is supposed to stay nice through tomorrow, so I'm going to drive her to work. :bigthumb:

I’m going to track this weekend as long as the weather holds out – hoping to run high 11’s. Video as always!
I will continue to update the thread as the work in the Hardtop progresses. At this point I need a downpipe and intercooler piping fab’d for the DD manifold before I can get any further. I may throw the Boost Logic kit on it as a temporary setup until I can align a fabricator. It will drop in with only a few hrs work at most, so I may do that for the short term. In addition to the turbo setup I’ve also got GSC S1 cams, GSC Beehive springs, Titan billet tensioner bracket and an ATI pulley waiting to go in as well.

The QSV just doesn’t really interest me much. It’s on the long list of ‘maybe someday’, but I’m not excited enough about it to pursue in the relative short term. It just doesn’t really have a tangible purpose for my goals. If I want low RPM stump-pulling TQ then I’d rather start with a platform already suited for it out of the box, i.e. a V8 or V10. A local acquaintance is running E85, QSV, 6265 and 264 cams and it makes awesome down low TQ (comparatively), but in lower gear pulls all it does is rip the tires loose. Once the turbo is lit and you’re banging gears the QSV does nothing. From a dig the QSV is superseded by 2-step/antilag. All the QSV really buys you is the ability to start a pull at 300-500RPM earlier than without; I’d rather just downshift and forego all the unneeded complexity. It looks neat on a dyno, but in the real world, for me at least, it’s a solution waiting for a problem. Not to mention you really need a standalone and a lot of tuning to set the appropriate thresholds for your particular setup; it’s not plug n play instant spool gains – it’s been proven that not ‘tuned’ correct there are essentially no gains. And lastly, at least on pump gas boost thresholds, you might not want all that extra airflow in the lower RPM; it may be more appropriate to keep the timing more advanced than to drop it in lieu of more boost.
What it really boils down to is I’m not afraid of, or otherwise turned off by “lag”. Lag can be mitigated with proper gear selection. What I want is top-end rip that will blur your vision at it pulls hard and harder to redline. A buddy of mine has an old cast wheel PTE 76GTS (76mm) that most would consider very lazy/laggy. After driving it back to back with my stock twin Hardtop, it has ~1000-1200RPM more “lag” (and about 500RPM more than my previous 72mm setup), but it makes up for it in every way once lit. If you’re in the right gear, then there is no “lag”. These new billet wheels will cut that difference in half or greater and make even more power.
no use for big brakes?
Sorry, missed your previous response. Honestly not really – the stock brakes are more than sufficient for anything I’ve been able to throw at them and that includes brake stomps at 150MPH. That said, I’m always willing to listen to a great deal. So depending on what you’ve got and the price… ..maybe.. Send me a PM, I guess.

I can’t even begin to assess a fair market value with the vague details provided. A 50k mile clean title original 6sp ’98 will easily fetch 34k+ depending. PM me a link to the ad or whatever and I can give you a more accurate reading. A few months back a 13k mile bone stock ’98 sold for 52k in less than 48hrs from when the ad was posted.

The asking price is a joke. If it’s a clean title original 6sp in great shape for the miles then it would realistically sell for mid/low 20’s.

download one of the computer simulators.......it's a LOT more difficult to fly R/C aircraft for me than real ones. If you have an XBOX there's a couple sims in the indie games section.

Seriously...WTF do you do for a living? I'm currently trying to get my foot in the door in IT after successfully (thanks to God) getting my own repair shop running on its own..cant wait to start making some serious dough so I can finish the VR-4 off the way it want.

Took the auto the track yesterday to see how it would fair with the OG twins.
Pertinent mods:
Blitz SUS intake
RMM downpipe
TRD gen2 exhaust
GReddy 3-Row FMIC
HKS SSQV
18" BFG drag radials
twins in sequential with the #1 turned up to 15psi; ~20psi peak
100 octane from the Marathon pump
Weather was nice -- upper 60's but with a fairly stiff headwind all day.
The BFG's are great on the street -- the car dead hooks with a 7-8psi footbrake launch. With the footbrake and E-brake it builds up to 15psi off #1 almost instantly before it overpowers the brakes, so I was expecting to leave fairly hard at the track. Unfortunately, I was literally the only car on radials (out of maybe 20 cars total) so they made me run on the unprepped lane, which was TERRIBLE. It was like an iceskating rink -- I was spinning the tires while staged on the footbrake before the car even started to boost, and spun most of the way through 1st and then it spun hard into 2nd every run.. :Tantrum2:
That said here are the slips:

Pass breakdown:
1st Pass -- 20psi in the tires; relatively short burnout. Footbraked and as soon as it start to build boost the rear tires broke loose. Spun hard all the way through 1st.
2nd Pass -- Headwind picked up and maintained the rest of the day. 19psi in the tires; slightly more aggressive burnout. Footbraked and e-braked to keep the rears from spinning while staged and left with a light 8-9psi. Mild wheelhop off the line (in an auto!?) but definitely left harder. Spun HARD into 2nd and the ass kicked sideways so I got out and back in, which killed the rest of the run..
3rd Pass -- 18psi in the tires; more aggressive burnout. Footbraked and e-braked and left with 12psi. Controlled spin through 1st but as soon as it shifted into 2nd it broke loose hard again..
4th Pass -- 18psi in the tires; very short burnout. Mild footbrake launch at maybe 4-5psi. Lightly wheel hopped again but felt fairly strong until it spun hard in 2nd again.
5th Pass -- 18psi in the tires; slightly more aggressive burnout. Slightly more aggressive footbrake launch at 6-7psi but again spun while still staged and then spun through 1st and 2nd again.
Called it a day after that. After the very first pass with the terrible 60' I was confident I'd run an 11.xx but just couldn't make it happen. In hindsight I should've tried talking the track guys into letting me make a pass in the left lane, but according to my pit neighbor it was terrible as well. Oh well; gives me something to shoot for again...!
Next time out I'll be on the CCW drag pack. I'm confident it will run a solid 11 with just a little more hook; spinning in 2nd is what's really killing me... :cursing:

I trade off between the 2 addictions. I've actually been on a break from flying this last year so, but plan to hit heavy again this spring. I've got another 40% (Cap 232) that's in the process of being refurb'd and its completion will be the impetus to get back to it. Go to www.modelaircraft.org and find a field near you and check it out. Most clubs are more than willing to put anyone interested on a buddy box and let them fly!
What on Earth do you do for a living?
Solutions Delivery for Point of Sale and EFT Processing for a Fortune 300 retailer. I'm not rich but I make a good pull while keeping a regular 9-5, and live in an area with a low cost of living. Most importantly NO KIDS!

If you're successfully running your own business then keep with that and continue to build it! I would not recommend starting off in IT later in life, if at all...! Experience trumps everything, and without any you'll have a tough time doing anything IT-related no matter what degree or certs you might have. It's a long road before you start making any 'real' money; I couldn't imagine starting off fresh now...
