View Full Version : Drivetrain Q?:trans max speed?

I did some searching and couldnt find what I was looking for. Can somebody point me in the right direction or tell me what the top speed is for a 5 and 6 speed trans? I swear at one point in time I remember looking at a graph or a calculator that gave top speeds for the two and also different #'s for different rev limits.

all the way to the bottom is the 5 speed and 6 speed charts Stealth 316 - Mitsubishi 3000GT AWD System (http://www.stealth316.com/2-awd6.htm#Speed)

Exactly what I was looking for thanks guys....
I'm also curious if anybody has this info on the jdm/mr 6 speed and the jdm awd auto trans?

MR trans was posted above. 218 top speed vs 234 for the US trans.
pretty sure the autos are 4 speeds but i might be wrong. there were a hand full of people on here running awd autos who should have a bit more info on them. IIRC GZP had an awd auto as well as Granny. 3SX had an awd auto in there drag car for a short period of time but they went back to standard.

do you mind if i ask why you care about top speed? i cant think of a single time that ive ever needed 5th or 6th gear during a race.

Well now I feel stupid for not paying more attention I thought vr4tune posted a graph for a 5 and 6 speed. I would still like to know the auto trans gear ratios thoe. The reason I need this info is to help me choose what trans and set of tires to go with and as for top speed I think I want to try the Texas mile sometime.

Not going to happen on the auto. Just warning you. 4th gear will not take it. Best bet is 5 speed and rev the piss out of 5th if you can make the power. 6th if you can't make the power that high in the rpms. Don't even show up with less than 1k HP.

Doesn't the transfer case start slinging the fluid out at 160 or something. Seems like I've read that before.

I know about the 4th gear and I wouldnt be suprised if the dsm community has made a stronger gear otherwise for the 1/4 mile you can always rev higher and run taller tires
and as for the transfer case im willing to take a chance or maybe Ill come up with something to make it better

I think somebody was working on a fix for it just for a top speed run. It was a long time ago but I want to say it might have been some kind of remote fluid thing. IDK

I just wanted to bring that up though. Having a TC lock up at 160+ would suck bad.

There are several final drive ratios for the F4A33/W4A33, I do not know which one the JDM AWD Auto uses, but it would be my assumption that it is the same 3.958 used in the USDM FWD. the OD ratio is 0.685, So that would give you a total ratio of about 2.71:1 (assuming the converter is locked up...)

Agreed.

This made me laugh for some reason lol

I thought you could add a tube in place of the vent and have a makeshift overflow tank in the engine bay. Granted will not help you if you have flung too much of your T-case fluid up into your over flow.

Nothing "locks-up" at 160mph... It will make lots of small jigsaw puzzle pieces though.... I'm sure the noise would make you pucker. :D The oil on your tires might prove to be inconvenient...

It was Erron Spalsbury that built the reservoir on his vent.... Ran a hose up the firewall and used a clutch fluid reservoir.

I cut off the factory vent and used the base of it for a grommet, bent up a piece of steel brake line to route around the axle, and connected that to a rubber hose running up the firewall for the vent. I don't often run it over 100 MPH, mostly the occasional pull to redline in third while tuning, but I haven't pushed any fluid since I extended the vent.

Edit: I knew I had a pic somewhere....

I will so be doing something similar, did you add any additional fluid? I have had my car up to 120-125 at the NG the last two years with just a stock T-case.

I recorded 167 mph in the standing km without 3rd gear and selecting 6th instead of 4th, dropping to 0 psi of boost because I had to go 2nd to 4th and having to wait from 4k to 5.4k rpm to get full boost back.........No TC fluid issues from a stock 6 speed TC. I would have been running maybe 130 in the 1/4 on that run.

Over about 200 laps of hitting 120-130 every straight my TC has not lost a drop of fluid. Must take a lot more to froth up and exit the breather.

The Redline Heavy Shockproof was the only fluid I ever pushed out of mine.

EDIT: unless you can find a way to change the front springs so that they arent hanging over the tires, i dont think youll be able to get taller tires on the car.

As far as the transfer case, ive hit the limiter in 4th many times and never had an issue. but i also dont have a vent on my transfercase. when i bought the car it was missing so i just stuck a rubber cork in the hole to keep dirt and stuff out. by the time the car was street-able i had completely forgotten about the rubber stopper and drove with it plugged for quite a while. no issues yet. although i like the idea of a breather tube much better.

can you revise for 8200 rev for both trans styles?

Thanks!

I have one ran out to 9K rpm for all 3 TT transmission if you want

You can run 33" truck tires with coilovers, lol. Can't turn though.....

Yessir, that would be great. I need a close up of it. Where I can really look at speed vs gear vs rpm tho. The ones aaron@state posted in the gearing thread have 50mph step increments. They're pretty damn worthess to interpolate with increments that big. What do you have, Chris?

Probably the same ones you have seen. I'll have to find them. it's an Excel graph.

Go there, use gear ratios from a google search. Works well.
