I disagree... I think they've had their ups and downs, some stuff better than others, but they have a pretty simple formula that hasn't changed all that much over the years... I view them as MTV era survivors, not sell outs. MTV was the worst thing that ever happened to the music industry. Any band that made it through that era profitably, without going down in flames with the hair bands, did something right...

wholeheartedly disagree. and the reason for the decline of MUSIC VIDEOS is because of the lack of quality being made--probably because the fucking RIAA is more concerned with quantity over quality.

I have no argument that a well made video is enjoyable to watch.... My issue with MTV and the entire music industry at the time was that it was ALL about the look... Talent had little to no bearing on who got played. It was all about the visuals. For every Michael Jackson there was 27 Culture Club's, Flock of Seagulls, Men Without Hats, and countless hair bands with zero talent, but a record producer supplied image...

For the most part, you just listed off a bunch of artists that are true rockers, that predated MTV... My point is, to MTV, and a large majority of the zombie viewers of the time, talent meant nothing... It was all about the image. The typical conversation at the time was not: " Have your heard XXXX's new song?" it was: "Have you seen XXXX's new video..?"

You say I insinuated those great artists had no talent, then YOU lump them in with memorable bands like Autograph, Warrant, Slaughter, Stryper, Ratt, White lion..., need I go on? The list is endless...

I could take it a step further, and make a case that MTV killed the careers of some pretty talented artists, when they got caught in the fall from grace of the hair band....

i don't resent hair-bands. i resent the backlash against hair-bands that unleashed the likes of pearl-jam upon the world.

Big Rush fan here. I have to say RIR is not my favorite in terms of the sound quality but the crowd enthusiasm is undeniable! I've seen them live about 10 times dating back to 1980 and they're still amazing though Ged has lost his upper register for the most part. They just released a concept album based on steampunk and it's pretty damn good IMO.

I have heard a few new songs, and admittedly they're not bad. Classic Rush, I can hack about 2-3 songs, then it gets on my nerves. Undeniable musical talent though. They really are incredible musicians.

RIR grew on me from the beginning, but I think that band, in that venue, in front of that crowd, with all the problems they encountered, is the best (however imperfect) concert ever committed to disk.

Rush, live, has an energy that was never captured by their studio stuff.

Jim, any of the problems you encounter with that disk can easily be overcome with the application of copious and excessive wattage.
