So I'm having problems figuring out if this is an aftermarket sunroof or not, and of it is I need to figure out how I'm able to remove it or be able to install the sunroof that should be in this car. Does anyone have the dimensions of the electric sunroof on a SL 3KGT? And any advice on this matter would be appreciated.

Thats definitely aftermarket.
As for the electric roof the only way you'd be able to swap to it is to swap the entire roof panel which requires glass removal, cutting and welding.

Unfortunately there isn't 3KGT out in my area with a sunroof. So endless I can get one bought pre cut and have it shipped to me. I don't think I would be able to remove the top panel endless I got rid of the sunroof completely. Which at this point it might be an option.

I have a crappy aftermarket sunroof on my car too. Eventually I am looking to swap roofs to a non sunroof roof. It's just if I want to do it myself or not.

Yea that's what I'm considering. My buddy's 92 SL doesn't have a sun roof and I'm jealous lol. I just want this pos off my car, but like you haven't decided yet it I want to do the work myself or not. More than likely I'll end up doing it.
it might be less hassle just replacing the seal around it. just a thought.

I replaced the seal around the frame that seals it to the body of roof. I tried Redoing the silicone around the plexi glass and it came out looking like crap no matter how nice and clean it was done. So now I'm just considering my options has anyone else had this similar problem and have done pics of before and after or a post on it I've been looking around the site for similar scenarios and only found conversions on the sunroof.
you can't hand-modify the seal. you need to go back to the MFG and get the appropriate seal. i know cause i've tried.

Alright, so i've decided to go ahead and cut the top of my car. I'm going to go to pick a part and cut the roof off a VR4. Has anybody done this before, and can give me some tips and where to cut or specific angles? or anything would be helpful. I'm not planning on doing the welding on, I want to but I'm not going to. I have a body shop in town that will be doing the install and cutting of my actualy current top of the car. The only thing I'm curious about is where I should cut on this VR4. Obvious more is better, but last I saw this car still had a good windshield and I don't want to screw that up for anyone who might need it. So any thoughts or suggestions would be awesome.

I like sunroofs. My car was a hardtop and I installed my(Ebay) power sunroof (used) for like $150. If you get a Hollandia, Inalfa, or Webasto, they're pretty reliable. Why not measure the one you have there and get a new power sunroof that is just a hair bigger. YOu'd then just need to make the hole a bit larger and fit it right in. Or, pull the one in there out, get new seals for it (not silicone) and reinstall it, or buy a new one of the same model, so you wouldn't have to mess with cutting. You may even find a nice aftermarket one in a junkyard.

I would definitely have to get a new one. Rather than buying a replacement. I have no idea who made this sun roof or even did the work, but when I pulled it out to re-seal it. The sheet metal of the roof was definitely hacked and not even. I'll read some more up on sun roof installation and look around eBay, but I still am leaning just getting rid of the sun roof. So I'll be looking over that conversion post. Thanks for the link, and thank you all for the input. Once I decided and start doing the work I'll make a build thread of the progress with pics.

Somebody did a horrible job installing it also. I’ve thought about getting one installed in mine but everybody tells me not to. I'd like to change tops like Toni did. I'd love to have the glass top.

Looks like a lot of body filler on that roof. I would just reskin it and start fresh.

Yea there is a crap load of bondo around the whole top. It's chipping away so I'm sure they had no idea what they were doing. I'm assuming they realized they did a horrible job and tried to seal and smooth out all they're mistakes. Ug, makes me sick when I walk into the garage and see it.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I am certainly not a professional anything but I think it came out pretty well. My welding and finish painting could have been better but it's solid.

Yup, I agree. Reskin if you want the flat roof back or get a stock sunroof donor roof.
