Okay, I know we have some techy types around here and I need some help.
My mom asked for a tablet for Christmas. I was just going to go half with my brother and get her a Kindle Fire. Things didn't work out so I am looking elsewhere.
Honestly, I don't really want to spend over $100 if I can help it, and I figure this weekend is probably the best time to find something.
All I will ever see her using it for is getting on Facebook and checking email.
Criteria for what I am looking for
Around $100
Around 7" screen
At least 8GB of storage
WIFI
I don't really know much about what tablets have for RAM or what kind of processors they have, but of course I'd want something that won't be constantly lagging.
I found this this (http://www.amazon.com/Android-Allwinner-Capacitive-Touchscreen-MID70408W/dp/B008OIH4DQ/ref=sr_1_7?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1353701574&sr=1-7&keywords=android+tablets#productDetails) and wasn't sure if anyone had any opinions. It has 3.5 stars with over 100 reviews.
Any and all advice is appreciated on the matter.

For that price you won't be getting a name brand tablet unless you can find a Nook Color or Kindle Fire refurbed or at an awesome price. I would try for a dual core processor and Android 4.1. That will give her the latest version and enough speed to handle anything out there now.

Yeah, I know. Money is a little tight. If my brother was able to go half with me on the Fire it would have been perfect for what she needs. I guess she really wants it for when she goes to my brothers so she doesn't have to take her laptop.

The one you posted isn't a bad deal, as long as the reviews show it's quality. The only downside is off brands like that typically don't get the frequent updates that others do. Might not be a deal breaker for your mom though. The processor is an off brand too so it's not going to be the fastest thing but if it's just web browsing and facebook it'll do fine.
If your mom likes to read and you look around I bet you can find a decent Nook Color for that price. They're a bit older and the specs aren't great but it does have web browser. I think I saw a refurbed one a week or two ago for under $100.

Thanks Terry. I'm going to keep looking around, not going to buy the first thing I see.

Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire are the only quality low cost tablets IMO.
Edit: nook and other known brand readers are probably decent too.

I would not go for an no brand tablet. IMO you'll regret it in the long run.
Your best best might be to find a first gen Fire on eBay or craigslist. I bet someone has upgraded to the fire HD and is selling their original.

Have you checked your local pawn shops?

I didn't think about that. There aren't very many around here though. The one I did stop at recently was way over priced on everything. They were asking more for some items than we could have gotten them for brand new, so I am not even going to try them.

A co worker brought an off brand tablet to work one day, brand New right out of the box. Was using it for like 40 mins and then the touch screen stopped working. Kind of funny

BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet 16GB Black by Office Depot (http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/727449/BlackBerry-PlayBook-Tablet-16GB-Black/)
These were being sold for $130 on Ebay, Office Depot, and a few other sites on Black Friday. Almost thought about picking one up myself, at that price, it's unbeatable. Shows sold out in most places now, but I wouldn't be surprised if you can find a few places still selling it for $130.

My girlfriend texted me about that earlier today. I actually just bought it.
Thanks guys. If my brother decided to give me half toward it, then yay me, if not, then oh well, my mom is worth it.

I talked to my brother too. He said there shouldn't be a problem with giving me $50 toward it. He just has to clear it with his boss, er wife. LOL
