Cash for clunkers was a start. I’m sure it will happen one way or the other. I’d say they will just impose restrictions that old cars cant pass.

UTRacerX9

I can see it happening in certain cities, but certainly not the entire US. In TX, they have legislation that if your car is over 25 years old, you don't even have to do emissions testing anymore.

My car failed PA emissions... If you spend $150 or more on parts (and labor at a qualified service station) trying to make it pass and it fails the second time (one free re-test) you get a sticker that says your emissions were waived and you're on your way.

This is just some politician exercising his right to be an incompetent tool.

Emissions testing? Whats that?

CoreyB
11-14-2012, 02:10 PM
We have just a CEL test here in NH. If you dont have a code stored that throws a CEL, you will pass the test. And that is ONLY on 96 or newer cars.

NickS VR4
11-14-2012, 02:22 PM
In NJ, '95 and older is only a visual cat check, and sniffer test.
96+ is no CEL, no pending emissions codes, and visual cat check.

Because people keep perpetuating that mileage myth? The only reason Japanese trade their cars in early is because of the cost of shaken. There is nothing that says they must retire their cars at any age or km's.

If Michigan were not - by happenstance - the auto manufacturing capital of the US, it would be at the forefront of the movement towards automotive obsolescence, because this state is stupid-lib-green by every other inclination.

MI being progressive has nothing to do with it not having emissions testing any longer. Detroit had testing up until 1995, and there were plans to start testing in the Grand Rapids area. The backlash from the populace and the fact that people were paying off private testing sights to get passes on cars that had no right to it were enough that the state legislature decided it wasn't a good idea and dropped it. Chances are it won't come up again for a long time because of the political suicide that it would entail from those that remember the last time.

CoreyB
11-14-2012, 08:18 PM
I could totally see this coming up again. The biggest beneficiary from this would be the automotive industry. Something our government has a huge stake in. Not saying this is coming our way, but if you look around, look at the current trend, look at who is in power, I dont see it as a stretch.

Nobody wants a 2wd, regular cab, manual shift truck. That's the only thing that gets even close to the number you're talking about, and they still are a ways off from that.

Corvettes have been getting that kind of mileage for eons, as long as you keep your foot out of them. Nothing groundbreaking there. My 99 C5 easily got 31 mpg at 75mph on flat ground. Hell, my dad's old 87 IROC got mid to upper 20's.

Feel free to buy new cars for people that can't afford new cars...

In the J.D. Power and Associates 2010 U.S. Initial Quality Study released last month, pickups widened their lead over light vehicles for the 2010 model year. Leading the pickup segment were GM’s Chevrolet Avalanche and GMC Sierra, tied for the fewest problems per vehicle (a total of 81).
