View Full Version : New computer hard drive help

I built a new computer, first one, and the hard drive isn't recognized. It shows up in the bios and it shows in disk management but I can't access it at all. You can see what I mean in the attached pictures.

I took one of the hard drives with Windows on it out of my laptop and am using it in the desktop right now, I've read that isn't a good thing but until I can get the new hard drive recognized there's nothing else I can do.

I've also tried using ubuntu to see if it can regonize the hard drive but no luck there either. Any idea?

What are your options when you right click the Healthy Primary Partition? (The first one 9xx.xx GB)

None, but clicking any of the other hard drives has all the options selectable.4693

I would try deleting it and recreating it. Doesn't seem to have a filesystem established.

hold on...

Is this drive set as your primary? It is labeled as Disk0. Its been a while since I've built PCs, do they still have jumper pins on them to establish Primary Master, Primary Slave, Secondary Master, Secondary Slave, Autoselect?

What windows OS are you trying to load onto it?

sounds like its doa... plug it into another pc... if nothing... its probably a gonner.

For my servers I buy Hitachi's(3 tb+)... I buy Samsung and Crucial SSD's.

Is this drive set as your primary? It is labeled as Disk0. Its been a while since I've built PCs, do they still have jumper pins on them to establish Primary Master, Primary Slave, Secondary Master, Secondary Slave, Autoselect?

I checked for jumper pins and it doesn't have any on it, neither does my other hard drive.

It's a Seagate 1TB ST1000dm005, once I get it to recognize I'm gonna put the windows 8 RC on it, but right now I'm using Windows 7

I agree with nick try the delete volume option and see how that works out.

Now that I took the hard drives out to make sure the new one works, I turn the computer on and get "error: no such device: some serial number"

This is an Ubuntu thing but I have no idea what to do, searching for help to it hasn't worked so far.

This happened on both my laptop and desktop.

I've managed to bypass the problem by running Ubuntu from my flash drive. With only the flash drive and my new 1TB hard drive installed it does recognize it in ubuntu, so I'm downloading Windows 8 RC to hopefully install on the 1TB and then use my other drives as storage.

Yeah. If you have a way to boot from bios into Windows installation. Disconnect your old drives, leaving only the new one, then try and let it install.

While in Ubuntu, I'd use Disk Utility to check health of the device, if it shows up on the list.

It says the disk is ok. I'm thinking the problem was having my other hard drive in there, donno why but I'll find out soon enough if this works.

Like I said. Its weird to me that this new drive is labeled disk0 when the primary is C:\. I think there is a conflict between your drives. Maybe your old one has jumpers on it making it primary. Dont know why the new one, without jumpers is also trying to be primary as well.

SATA drives don't have jumpers. Only IDE(maybe SCSI) drives do.

How are the designated Primary and Secondary? Bios? Control Board?

Last time I really worked on comps was in 2002. Been on laptops since, and don't fix other peoples anymore.

SATA drives are one drive to a cable. None of the IDE 2 drives on a cable silliness

I've got Ubuntu installed on the 1TB drive now, and early attempts to install the windows 8 rc have failed. I mounted the iso but it just wouldn't run the setup. I'm gonna try putting the iso onto a flash drive in the same way that ubuntu is runnable from a flash drive and see if that works. I'm kinda doubtful about it though.

Interesting development. Ubuntu will not boot correctly when I have the old hard drive (the one with windows 7) plugged in. But it boots when I put my other 500 gig hard drive in. This is leading me to believe that the hard drive with windows 7 for some reason tries to take over any booting process.

Alright I got windows 8 rc running now on the 1TB. It's very different than windows 7, the menu's seem to be harder to get to than needed but I'm figuring it out.

I should have just gone this route in the first place instead of pulling out old hard drives, installing Ubuntu and crap. Now I've got to figure out a way to get Ubuntu off of my laptops hard drive so I can use it.
