Around January, Im going to get my 5 speed n/a transmission rebuilt. I have 150k miles on it and experiencing a few issues. I dont want them to escalate.

Currently, 2nd gear requires more "work" to get into than any other gear, but it doesnt grind. Could the issue with that just be a synchro?

3rd gear "randomly" grinds. It'll grind once every 3 or 4 weeks. Im thinking of replacing that gear and synchro.

Reverse can be tricky to get into. Sometimes I have to play around (Go into 1st and then back to reverse once or twice) to lock into reverse all the way.

Because, the tranny will be pulled.. Im going to just replace the clutch, flywheel, and throwout bearing.

So, Ill most likely be getting 2nd gear and synchro, 3rd synchro, reverse synchro, and Exedy 05048 clutch kit. What else normally goes out with these trannys?

Im planning on ordering the 2nd gear and the reverse synchro from 3SX and clutch kit from Amazon. Are there any cheaper alternatives?

Where can I get the 2nd and 3rd gear synchros?

I have a mechanic who I go to for all of my work. Are these transmissions unusual, or should the average mechanic be able to do all the work?

I wouldn't even order trans parts until you open up your transmission. If 2nd is giving you a lot of issues, then you probably need a new gear and hub/slider assembly. The dog engagement teeth on the 2nd gears like to get worn down to straight angles instead of looking like triangles.

For FWDs? I checked online, but maybe i missed it. It shoot them an email later.

When the car is off, my car shifts into second (along with all other) gears just fine. Could the issue still be the hub/slider assembly?

Adjust your clutch pedal before you go thinking you have other problems.

That's actually the first thing I did ;)

You might also only be having a clutch problem, like a weak spring.

Would the weak spring cause my clutch to not fully disengage?

Yes, it could.

Yes, it could.

I JUST ordered an ACT HDSS (http://www.maximalperformance.com/store/clutches/flywheels/act-heavy-duty-street-disc-clutch-fwd.html) kit from Maximal.. As I know my current clutch is bad. The site says that a "throwout bearing" is included. Is that the spring that you were referring to?

No. The springs are in the hub of the clutch. The TOB is what the clutch pedal engages. It slides on the input shaft via the release fork.

A bad TOB can cause issues too, but you would know it if your TOB were bad, because you wouldn't be able to shift, period.

Hmm.. I'm getting my tranny diagnosed when I get the clutch installed, so I'll get that looked at. Thanks for all the help!!

Hmm.. thats good to know. Im just worried about prices. Ill check 'em out.

I got email responses from both, TeamRIP and Jacks Transmission. The prices are very similar.
