Thread: Best stuff for breaking loose bolts

  1. #11
Ya, I'm really surprised by these results. I thought I had tried everything out there and always seem to have the best results with PB blaster by a LONG way.

Some times I'll heat a nut then spray the penetrating oil on it. When it starts cooling it seems to penetrate much faster. If it doesn't come off after that I'll heat again quickly and try to get it off before the heat transfers to the stud.

yep! providing the nut/bolt isn't surounded in plastic or anything flamable, heat (if you have the use of it) is the best option, cherry red and take it off!

I worked at a nuclear motor service center when I was younger. The nuts and bolts were huge on these things so a stuck bolt was a pita. We would try and heat the nut as quickly as possible trying to avoid the stud or bolt then try to take the nut or bolt off before the heat transfers to the stud or bolt. Sometimes we would only get a few turns using a toque multiplier before it would start seizing again so out came the liquid nitrogen to cool it all down then start heating again. It sucked!

I have been using the acetone-AFT mixture for a year now. It dissolves rust. It's awesome for breaking rusty bolts loose, but the side effect is that it'll completely eat things that are really rusty, which sometimes sucks, because it'll rust the 6 points off of a nut and the middle of the nut will stay there. However, this is easily dealt with using vice grips.

We have this industrial lubricant called Kwikee Penetrant. It's made up of ATF, moly and mineral spirits. I'll have to try the mixture suggested in this thread and see how it compares.

I have a bottle of this mixed up in my garage. I have not seen a noticeable difference but it is what I reach for first. However, if you think PB stinks (which it does) this stuff really rots ass!!!! Like super dead moose ass, it's terrible. I am guessing from the ATF which smells like dead hooker ass anyway.

I have not tried a long soak though, usually only an hour or so.
