    New Yorkers with Standalones..

How are you guys passing inspection and emissions? I'm wanting to go with an AEM but with the inspections connecting the obd2 port to some state computer I dont really know what to do. I dont really want to go with a piggy back but its looking like the only option. I am upstate since I believe NYMA has quite a bit different inspection/emissions standards.

    Yup.

AEM's do not pass because they are not obd-2 compliant, all the monitoring systems dont read through the port anymore.

there are a few ways around it though.

    1) Make it so you can put the stock ecu back in, it might not drive great but in some cases it is enough to drive around a little and then get inspected, you would have to switch back to stock injectors, ect...
    2) Just get a sticker off another car, for example inspect your DD 2 times and use one on you 3S. This will get you through most pullovers and checkpoints, but i believe they can still check if your car was actually inspected so they might still get you at some point.
    3) Find a friend that works at an inspection station. Find a friend with a 3S that will pass. Bring your registration with you, but bring your buddies car. When you get there tell the inspector (this is why you need to be friends with him) to scan your registration into the computer, but plug into the other 3S and it will think its your car and when it passes technically you have a "legal" inspection.

Otherwise just dont bother with it, build your car how you want and drive the hell out of it, and just deal with the occasiona $50 inspection ticket.

Note options 2 and 3 are illegal and could get yourself jail-time for fraud (or something like that) or someone else fired/fined. I've heard some stories of jail-time happening, but have never seen it personally. I have seen people get fired for it though. If you really want to go AEM and still be legal come inspection time, option 1 is really the only way to do it without looking over your shoulder the whole year. Back to stock ECU and make it safe to drive like that for few days to pass the monitors.

Granted, chances are if you're using an AEM, most of the stuff on your car isn't DOT compliant so you're watching your back anyway.

I wonder if it would be worth the effort to try and register it as a 'custom vehicle'?

The State defines a custom-built vehicle as any homemade vehicle including electric-powered vehicles not certified by the DMV as well as vehicles made from kits or any other vehicles with special parts or characteristics.

How are you passing inspections now?
What I was going to do when I switch over to the AEM is what others already have said....Option 1. Right now I'm using a SAFC using a patch cable with 660 injectors (551awhp @ 18psi on pump gas). Pull the cable and plug the AEM in and go at it, easy swap actually. That's IF I can ever get Ray to tune it for me as he keeps telling me to leave it alone as it makes big power and runs great....lol

The way your talking about is the safest way to do it, and probably actually the easiest way.

Also put in the AEM it will make more power and will drive much nicer.

In PA I just put less than 5k miles on the car every year (either really don't put 5k miles/year or get another speedo cluster) which made the car emissions exempt. I'm not sure if they have that option in NY.
