mine broke over the course of a few days...noticed a small vibration...then it got worse...then it helped contribute to my transfercase failure.

Don't drive it, fix it NOW!

this is the carnage from mine...

Forgive me for being vague. Its not broken, still drives. I just got my transmission/clutch replaced and the shop said I will need to replace my drive shaft soon due to warn bearings/joints and the only way to fix it would be to buy a whole new drive shaft.. this is coming from a drive line shop. I haven't noticed any vibrations or sounds but then again I have only driven the car a few times before the transmission and clutch went out. I never got a chance to check it out while it was on the lift and this is my first VR4. So I don't even know if the drive shaft is one piece, I'm assuming its a two piece with some type of hanger bearing?. What caused your drive shaft failure?

It is a 3 piece and the part that normally goes bad is the U joint that is just before the transfer cause. There are 2 carrier bearings total for it. Age, wear and tear, elements, are all factors for any driveshaft bearing failure for obvious reason's. Normally, a driveline shop can just simply make you another front half for your driveshaft. I know Atlanta Driveline charges around 350$ to make this unit as I have gotten a quote for it before.

When it is starting to go bad, you can hold the drive shaft end in your hand, with it uninstalled of course, and you can feel flat spots on the bearings, as in you cannot move it around in your hand without it having hard spots...you should be able to move it freely.

Awesome, with 180,000 on the car its probably due for u joints and new carrier bearings. Now when I buy a new drive shaft is this something I could do with hand tools? I cant imagine it being more then some bolts and a couple of exhaust hangers? Ive done drive shafts before but never a 3 piece. Also can you grease the carrier bearings?

Our driveshaft is not serviceable so you will have to take it to a driveline shop. when you take it apart, make sure you mark it before hand exactly how it came off. You can remove the driveshaft itself with basic hand tools but the carrier bearings will need a little more than that depending on how much time has effected them...I replaced my driveshaft and carrier bearings with a lift and had to use a torch to help persuade the bearing to come off. Only took about an hour in a half.

I would also advise that you pack the middle bearing, the only serviceable one on the driveshaft, with wheel bearing grease...pack it in there really good and torque it properly and you will be fine.

Edit: Also, if this make's it any better...my friend and I where at the shop and I brought my fiance with me...we where in the shop playing on the computer and she said she was bored. I told her jokingly "well if your bored, you go take the driveshaft out, otherwise chillout." Well, open mouth and insert foot....sure enough...she walks back in some time later and says "Ok, what next..?" I was like WTF!? she removed the driveshaft and didn't break anything...she's only 5'8" and 115 pounds but don't let the size fool you...those lil red heads pack a punch.

Any idea where I can get the aluminum one piece? I seen a post some where on the other site, but could not find...

I have vibration issues. Changed out the rear carrier and now need to do the front. Changing the rear seemed to have made it worse.

350 mile trip today, wish me luck!

Help them, for they know not that which they do not know!

You HAVE to put the driveshaft back together the way it came apart or else it can cause vibrations. Personally, I would not run a 1 piece driveshaft but that's just me...I'd at least run a 2 piece.
