So I'm going on a hiking trip Monday with a good friend.....

Spending the night in a shelter on the AT at 6500ft.

    Any tips, tricks or advice?

How long are you going to be on the trail? What distance are you doing?

My first time through this particular area. I guess we are doing 4.4 miles in and 4.4 miles out.

Where are you located? 9 round trip shouldn't be too bad at all. That gives you time to enjoy the sites on the way just be sure to bring plenty of water and some snacks (or lunch if you plan on doing a full lunch at the end). mmmm, I want to go for a leisure hike

Socks and good hiking boots. Nothing else matters nearly as much. I've done plenty of hiking on the AT, and the AT in the NE is horrendously rocky. You don't want to roll your ankle, or beat the heck out of the bottom of your feet. Oh, and do some research on how big the shelter is, it will more than likely have late through-hikers in it, or other people will beat you there. Be prepared to not use the shelter if it's not a big one.

Which section are you doing? I've done 95% of PA, and parts of Maryland, and up a bit past the Delaware River Water Gap.
