Safe to drive with a broken front differential?

My TT is in the shop and the mechanic believes the front differential is gone, as no power is being transferred to the front wheels. My AWD is essentially RWD, now

I drove the car for a couple of days before taking it in. Would that have damaged anything else? Can I continue to drive it while waiting for parts?

What would you recommend for repair? I have a June 1991 build 5sp tranny, and no perf mods. Would you suggest rebuilding with OEM parts, getting 3rd party replacements, or looking for a used one? Thanks.

    Geordon,

I would hit up Mikosta77, he is in Brooklyn, not too far from you you could pick it up and save on shipping.

Personally, no I wouldn't drive it. There are a lot of people that'll rebuild them and used ones are not too hard to find if you're looking in the right paces.

If you feel like ordering parts and having it rebuilt locally check out 3SX.com they have an endless supply of tranny parts at reasonable prices, plus if you phone and buy it all at once the chances are good of getting a discount

I PM'd "Mikosta", but had to explain what the front differential was in the transaxle, so I said I would be interested in the entire transaxle.
