Description
March '07, Fuel prices were climbing and I was DD a Diesel GMC pickup. My niece had just married a guy that owned a '91 3000GT SL. He had blown the motor up and attempted to install a JDM motor in it. It had been sitting in my dad's field for about 4 months. I bought it for $1000.
I WAS and old school V-8 guy, so I took the car to an old racing buddy that completed the install of the motor. It ran decent for about 6 months, then jumped time.
Still worrying about working on a DOHC motor I took the car to a different mechanic that knew these cars. When he pulled the heads to get the valves replaced (bent 3), we discovered I had a 2.5 DOHC. This motor was never released in the U.S. I had just become a member of the Oklahoma Chapter (Oklahoma3s) and received alot of help finding out about these cars. I was needing a lower timing cover and the valves. One of the members who was moving on to a different platform told me "I'll do ya one better than that. I've got a complete motor, transmission and a box full of parts. If you'll come and get them, you can have them". I left the next day and drove to Edmond, OK and picked it all up.
It took me approx. 4 weeks to find valves for the 2.5 heads. The motor was never released in the U.S. I found the valves in New Zealand.
The guy got the car back together and I drove it home. 3 days later it jumped time again. This time I decided it was time for me to learn more about DOHC motors. I had rebuilt a few V-8's. Since I had the correct motor given to me, I put that one on the motor stand and went to work on it. The next spring I put in the correct motor. It ran great.
I started to get lifter tick the winter of '09. I added some seafoam to my oil to try to clear it up and ended up spinning a bearing. So, I bought 99 lifters, a forged crank and rebuilt it again. That was approx. 14,000 mi ago.
I DD this car and drove it to the NG this year in Indy. Next year I WILL have a trailer so I can enter the events. Didn't want to chance breaking something and then tryin' to figure out how to get it home. LOL
This past winter I installed new custom leather seats from Leatherseats.com. I removed and dyed the carpet Charcoal Gray. I also made a custom door sill that is backlit in blue. Looks awesome at night.
I know this car won't be fast. So, my goal is to make it pretty (and reliable). Sooner or later I'll have the extra $$$ and I'll own a VR-4. That's when the fun will REALLY start.
